Employment Essentials
Knowing the Rules of the Game
This Comprehensive full day certificate workshop designed for BC workers focuses on the essential knowledge new, young and otherwise marginalized workers need to know in any type of workplace. We hope to partner with community organizations to empower their participants to betterretain their jobs through the knowledge of their rights and responsibilities as an employee.
Learning Outcomes/Compentancies
Rights and responsibilities - Workplace Policies - Collective Labour Agreements
What is an MOU and how it applies to workers - WorksafeBC - Employment Standards Act
BC Human Rights - Federal Labour Standards Act - Related resources when &where to get help
This knowledge is extremely important especially since many historically marginalized people are now able to enter the workforce in a meaningful way. It can be life changing to earn a living wage, however if we don't know how to navigate the environment it can end up being a negative experience. Getting the job is just the first step. Give your cohort the advantage of this essential knowledge they need to retain the job they trained and worked so hard for.
Our learning outcomes and competencies include how to avoid the pitfalls that often can lead to lack of worker retention. We will discuss employment law, private and public sector work, union agreements, federal and provincial employment standards, human rights and provide resources as well as from an indigenous perspective. This is the stuff that doesn't seem to matter until it does. Since this is an information heavy course we will break it up with some fun activities.
A certificate of competency will be awarded for those who fully attend.
This is designed as a one full day, in person program however arrangements can be made for other types of scheduling including virtual delivery options.
